Park Reviews

AdaptedDesign's Park Reviews for Accessibility and Inclusion features. Parks should be spaces where everyone can play and enjoy the outdoors safely. However, many parks are far from inclusive or accessible in the types of equipment they provide or the surfaces and obstacles they have that make accessing these spaces difficult. These park reviews look beyond the conventional playground elements and assess these features from the perspective of parent with a child with disabilities and whether or not this would be a place universally accommodating of all users. The following parks are presented in descending order based on their AdaptedDesign rating. 5 star ratings are the best for accessibility and inclusive features while 1 and 2 star ratings are for parks that may not be accommodating of wheelchairs or those users that require more inclusive features:

★★★★★

seattle's pathways park

This park has just reopened. It ticks all the boxes having multiple inclusive swing options, a wheelchair accessible merry go round, accessible pathways and play surfaces, and great sensory spaces, too. There are a good number of accessible parking spots close to the restrooms and the park entrance. The restrooms have a large powered height adjustable changing table. This park has a dedication to a boy named Eli and has Southern Lushootseed translations throughout the park.

edmonds' civic park

Edmonds’ Brand New Civic Park with playground is dedicated to Mika who was a wheelchair user. The playground has a saucer swing and wheelchair merry-go-round however there was no inclusive swing at the time of review. The play surface is rubber and there are some concrete ramps. There is no shade or covered areas near the playground. Parking is exclusively on street parking but some semi-successful accessible street parking is provided on the other side of the park. Several all gender restrooms are provided with small changing tables however they are fairly small restrooms and there are no oversized changing tables.

bothell's miner's corner

There is adequate accessible parking and good pathways throughout the park. The playground is well protected with natural shade. The playground does have a lot of grade change which may make traversing difficult but all levels of the playground have accessible routes (although some may be fairly steep). There is limited inclusive equipment with only one inclusive swing observed. Restrooms included a concrete bench that could be used as an oversized changing table and the doors had automatic openers.

puyallup's bradley lake park

This play area welcomes you to "Savanah's Place: Where Play is Accessible to All" I was impressed by the long ramp that allows access to the various levels of the play structure. There was an inclusive swing and rubber play surface but the equipment is a bit older. There is reasonable accessible parking and restrooms are nearby. An adjacent playground had a wood chip play surface.

woodinville's wilmot gateway park

This park features a long covered promenade near restrooms and a busy river walk with pedestrians and bicyclists. The playground has a rubber play surface, one inclusive swing. The accessible parking is adequate but doesn't have enough curb cuts for barrier-free access. (Photo is from Woodinville's city website)

mountlake terrace's ballinger park

The Hazel Miller Universally Accessible Playground is a newer addition to Ballinger Park. This playground is not located near either parking lot and there are not nearly enough accessible parking stalls. There are also accessible restrooms near the parking lot quite far from the playground. There is no shade so this playground has a high solar exposure. There are some semi-inclusive play equipment but they do not have harnesses.
